McQueen Boys, Centennial Girls Hoist Class 5A Trophies In Nevada

Yerington's Ku Stevens, who attend Oregon in the fall, won all three distance events in the Nevada Class 2A state championship meet at Reed High in Reno. His triple included 1:59.90 in the 800 meters, 4:15.77 in the 1,600 and 9:17.49 in the 3,200. Stevens won the 3,200 meters by more than a minute. 

Stevens' performances in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters broke the stadium and meet records and they held up as the fastest across all five classifications. He also anchored Yerington to a win in the 4x800 relay. 

Sophomore Kira Noble led Incline to the state title by sweeping the 2A 800, 1,600 and 3,200 finals. 

The NIAA conducted its first state track and field championships since 2019. 

Zoey Bonds, the younger sister of three Division 1 athletes, swept the hurdles events (14.17 and 44.39) to help Centennial win the team championship. Bonds also won the high jump (5-4) and long jump (17-10).  

Jordan Jackson of Faith Lutheran won the 200 meters in 25.01 seconds and the 400 in 56.32.

McQueen won the boys 5A title on the strength of a balanced effort and points in 14 of 17 events. Jayden LaGrone won the 300-meter hurdles in 38.39 seconds and was part of the winning 4x200 relay.

In the 4A meet, held May 13-14, Canyon Springs duo Jamarion Stubbs and Tevin Howerton went 1-2 in the 100 meters, the 200 and the 400 for huge points that put the team over the top the championship. Stubbs ran 10.62 in the 100, 21.77 in the 200 and 50.48 in the 400.  They were also part of the winning 4x100 relay. 

Raekwon Weatherspoon of Legacy won the long jump (22-5) and triple jump (46-4) and was also part of the winning 4x200. 

Claire Killpack won the 4A girls 1,600 in 5:09.31 to help lead Palo Verde to the team title. 

In the Class 3A meet, Sparks sophomore Chris Cormier won the boys 400 meters in 49.74. Zack Cook of North Valleys won the 100 (11.04) and 200 (22.16w). 

Moapa Valley's Ethan Witter won the 800 and teammate Cyrus Katich won the 1,600 and 3,200 to help drive the team to a championship. 

Payge Walz of Spring Creek swept the girls hurdles race to help her team win the 3A title. Kelly Denninghoff of Virgin Valley won the 400 meters in 57.99 and the 800 in 2:22.90. 

Kaelin Gowdy swept the 100, 200 and 400 in the Class 1A meet, but Eureka prevailed with the team victory thanks to a jumps double by Isabella Minoletti, Megan Johnson's win in the 800 and first place in the 4x100 relay. 

Dekel Regev from Adelson won four field events in the 1A meet. He won the shot put, discus, high jump and pole vault.
