Rancho Girls Smash 4x100 Record, Centennnial Girls Win 8th Straight

By John Dixon of DyeStat

The Rancho girls made a big statement in the sprints on Saturday at the Nevada state championships at Carson High School, but the overall depth of Centennial made winning the state team title too tall of an order.

Rancho standouts Teleda Williams and Gizelle Reid helped the school smash the all-time state record in the 4x100 relay with 45.81, which is US#10 this season. Williams broke Class 4A meet records in the 100 (11.90) and 200 (23.85) and Reid won the 400 (54.75) and was second in the 200 (24.17).

But Centennial won its eighth straight 4A girls team title with 103 points and scored in 13 of the 18 events. Rancho was second with 68 points. Centennial's only two victories came from Quincy Bonds in the 300 hurdles (43.5h) and Ashley Moore in the triple jump (38-11.75).

Freshman Grace Cunningham of Silverado continued the family tradition with a victory in the state high jump final, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches.

Liberty's Gabby Carson tied the all-time state record in the pole vault with 13-6.

Bishop Gorman won its first 4A boys track title with 113 points. Reed edged out Centennial for second.

Bishop Gorman's Jalen Nailor led the team with wins in the 100 (10.70), 200 (21.57) and he ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay (41.46).  The Gaels also won the 4x200 (1:26.22) and had gold medalists with Kyu Kelly in the long jump (22-9) and Cam Hunterton in the triple jump (45-5).

Wheelchair athlete Ben Slighting (Palo Verde) won the 3,200 meters in 8:51.31.

In Class 3A, Mojave scored a 10-point win over Desert Pines for the title. The Rattlers avenged a six-point loss in 2017.  Mojave scored heavily in the jumps as John Harper won the high jump (6-6) and Quincy Smith and David Warren went 1-2 in the triple jump (46-3.25/44-1.75).
