Centennial girls run 4A win streak to seven years

The Centennial boys smashed the state 4x200 and 4x400 records

The Centennial girls continued their large school domination of the Nevada state championships with a 117-point margin of victory over second place Rancho, 174-57. This was Centennial’s seventh straight team championship.  The Centennial boys made it four championships in the last six years with a 42.5-point margin over Reed. Perfect weather contributed to 16 new NIAA championship meet records and four all-time Nevada bests.

Boys Highlights – 

4A – 

Centennial dominated the sprint podium with places 1-2-3 in the 200 meters, Savon Scarver (21.51), Tre Harley (21.65) and Randall Jubilee (21.74). Jubilee won the 400 (47.24) with Harley second (47.40). The 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays also saw Centennial gather golds. The 41.23 in the 4x100 was a Class 4A meet record and the 4x200 (1:25.51) and 4x400 (3:14.85) were not only meet records, but all-time Nevada bests.

Legacy’s Jamal Britt captured golds in the hurdles with 14.20 and 36.51. The 300 hurdles time smashed an all-time Nevada record. Britt also won the long jump (22-7.50).

Desert Oasis’ Nick Benham doubled up in the shot put and discus (57-4/175-6).

3A – 

Sunrise Mountain’s Musio Jimenez dominated the distance events winning the 800 (1:55.47), 1,600 (4:23.25) and set a 3A meet record in the 3,200 (9:35.32). He also anchored the winning 4x800 relay.

Mojave sophomore Noah Thompson won the 100 and 200 (10.87/22.02).  The 100 time was a meet record.

Dayton’s Jonathan Ply won both hurdles (14.63/39.67) and the high jump (6-8). He needed a jump-off with Elko’s Kyrin Allen for the win.

Lowry’s Bryan Terry won both throws (51-8/156-0)

2A – 

Lincoln County and White Pine battled right to the end and wound up tied with 130 points for the team title.

Lincoln County’s Landen Smith was at home on top of the awards podium with wins in the 100 (11.18), 200 (22.77), 400 (51.66) and 300 hurdles (41.44).

White Pine’s Samuel Stewart countered with wins in the 800 (1:59.81), 1,600 (4:37.97) and 3,200 (10:23.20).

Pershing County’s Tad Milich won both the high jump (5-6) and pole vault (12-0)

1A –

Spring Mountain made it three straight team championships as Ka’ron Shomo led the charge with wins in the 110 hurdles (16.31), long jump (19-10) and triple jump (43-3.75).

Word of Life’s Greggory Gilbert won the 100 (11.11), 200 (23.10) and was second in the 400 (50.47).

Virginia City’s Colton Hess doubled in the 400 (50.20) and 800 (2:00.22).

Sierra Lutheran’s Jared Marchegger won the 1600 (4:43.10) and 3200 (10:04.43) and anchored the winning 4x800 (9:00.50)

Girls’ Highlights –

4A – 

Spanish Spring’s Jessica Ozoude defended her 2016 100 and 200 championships, running 11.64w (3.3w) and 25.30 (-0.5w).

Centennial went 1-2 in the 800 and 1,600 with Karina Haymore first in the 800 with a 4A meet record (2:09.13) and second in the 1,600 (5:06.28). Alexis Gourrier won the 1,600 (4:59.10) and was second in the 800 (2:13.97).

Centennial’s Talie Bonds won both hurdle events (13.86/42.88) and was on medal-winning 4x100 and 4x200 teams. Talie continued the family tradition of sub-14 100 hurdle times. Sister Tianna, now at the University of Arizona, holds the state records (13.50/40.90). Freshman sister Quincy placed third in the 300 hurdles (44.53).

The Rancho girls won all the sprint relays (47.15/1:37.77/3:50.68). The 4x200 was an all-time state record.

Damonte Ranch’s Cassidy Osborne-Butler swept the throws (46-4/137-1)

3A-

South Tahoe’s Maya Brosch was the 3A star with wins in the 200 (25.71), 400 (57.97), 100 hurdles (14.91) and 300 hurdles (43.98). The 300 hurdles time was a state meet record.

Team Champion Tahoe-Truckee was led by Brenna Wapstra-Scott’s wins in the 800 (2:21.10), 1,600 (5:07.93) and 3,200 (11:44.65)

Churchill County’s Whitney Skabelund defended her long jump and triple jump titles with jumps of 17-3.75 and 35-6.25.

Cheyenne won the 4x100 (49.29) and the 4x200 (1:44.28) and had a win by Angela Hammond in the 100 (12.64).

Sparks had a double winner in the throws as Senifa Po’oi threw 37-8.25 and 124-8.

Elko’s Marissa Richey became a three-time state champion in the pole vault with a 3A meet record 11-5 clearance.

2A-

The Meadows School’s Ellen Hirsberg defended her 400 and 800 championships (58.91/2:20.76) and also won the 1,600 (5:14.84). Ellen, a junior, has won the 2A 800 three straight years. 

White Pine’s Lily Fullmer set a meet record in the 300 hurdles (46.68), won the triple jump (35-4.75) and placed second in the 100 hurdles (15.71).

Andre Agassi Prep set meet records in the 4x100 (50.87) and 4x200 (1:46.67).

1A – 

Smith Valley’s Mattie Johns occupied a permanent spot on the medal stand with wins in the 200 (27.01), 100 hurdles (16.53), 300 hurdles (48.01) and pole vault (9-6).

Not to be outdone, Sierra Lutheran’s Elaina Marchegger, became a three-time state champion in the 800 (2:32.54) and the 1,600 (5:40.47) and a two-time winner in the 3,200 (12.27.27), as well as anchoring the winning 4x800 (10:59.92).

Whittell won the 4x100 (52.73) and the 4x200 in meet record time (1:50.96).

Jackpot’s Laura Cortes won the throws (34-1.50/123-3).

Team Champions – 

AAAA – Centennial boys 104 points, Centennial girls 174

AAA – Sunrise Mountain boys 70, Tahoe-Truckee girls 81

AA – White Pine and Lincoln County boys 130 (tied), White Pine  girls 138

A – Spring Mountain boys 192, Sierra Lutheran girls 144
